421 and 57 is a killer blend. sounds huge, and you can blend the two tones to taste. i use a 609 live, and it's a great mic on it's own. but my first choice for recording is the blend. I used the 421 + 57 combo before, but now I'm more partial to the 906: for me it's easier to get a nice sound on distorted guitar.

The old black/gold version (MD409) has a huge reputation, but I don't think it deserves it. To me it sounds the same as an e906 in flat presence mode. The e609 to my ear sounds a lot like the e906 in boost presence mode. Anyway you look at it the e609 is a nice mic, but the e906 is better, if you can afford it.

You have to move it around to "EQ" the sound. The e906 has a wider "sweet spot" and, to my ears, sounds a little "better" or more natural than the sm57.I have used both mics before but never back to back, but can't figure out which I liked more. -the e609 sounds more open, transparent, and better on clean tones. Can sound a bit brash on overdriven tones. -The SM57 is more congested, more colored. The e906 has a few dB more sensitivity, and putting the switch in the "flat" setting actually gets that mic pretty close to being flat.
