Foot on brake 2. Release e-brake 3. Shift to D or R 4. Foot off the brake, onto the gas pedal I don't see a problem (not a car expert here) if you swap step 2 and 3. I'm guessing the OP does it like I do, but he forgot to do step 2, he shifted, then stepped on the gas. I've definitely done that, but nothing went wrong with the car after.
