Don't forget to pay attention to the chamber. I agree that you should start with good barrel, but the chamber is equally as important. I bought a 10/22 Shilen barrel a couple of years ago and the chamber was long. You could drop a round in the chamber and the bullet wouldn't engrave the rifleing lands. It was quite sloppy to be honest about it.

I have Bartlein barrels on some of my other rifles, but I've never used a Shilen. Shilen gets talked about and has some fans for sure but I figure its kind of a roll of the dice anyways. Does Criterion seem to make a comparable quality barrel, or should I just go with whats a known brand to me?

My select match cleans up without a trace of copper while the other tends to have a small amout of copper in it. You will have to be a benchrest shooter to notice the difference in accuracy! Still a number of Shilen barrels in the Bench Rest winners circles. With the Bench rest crowd there is a lot of the follow the leader syndrome so barrels will come and go in popularity until a top competitor wins with one and everybody gets back on the bandwagon.
