Make it quite long (big) so mobs requires time to get around. Of course keep a space open like 2-3 space, so the mobs can get into it and to your people and doesnt attack the fence. Always pull out your people from the house because else the mobs will attack the building if your people are in it.

You can build it all separately (ie: foundation->walls->roof->doors/stairs) or use the 'Room' button to create foundation, walls, and roof together. I wondered if them splitting the roof into roof & ceiling was a way to allow someone to change a roof without exposing the room. It was likely done because of the solar roof.
