If tModLoader doesn't work, of course check for the ports 7777 to be opened assuming your using the default port. The mods should auto download and enable/disable when attempting to join a server, but Tmodloader usually crashes when entering. tModLoader gameplay becomes desynced/laggy during multiplayer. Me and my friend have been trying to play a modded playthrough together, but after a certain point in progression (usually after EoC) my game becomes desynced from the world (in such a way that opening treasure bags takes 20 seconds, same with picking up blocks and items).
