The black star can trap a human soul where as the white star will not. The white star can only trap up to greater soul. The black star traps a human soul which is equivelant to a grand soul. When i need to update my armour or weapons i just use my enchanting table at lake view then go to embershard to soul harvest; fast traveling back and forth.
