Considering cutting them just below the middle step at the bottom of that solid section just before the slot cut out begin again. My initial plan was to cut them so the steps are at roughly 20” apart.

The ropes are lighter and overall quieter. I do have the buckles on the straps covered with kayak grips but even just pulling the strap tight can cause a bit of noise on quiet days. The ropes also "slide" up and down on the tree easier once the stick is set so you can make a small adjustment here and there if necessary.
