Jun 21, 2009. #1. Hello, I have a 1967 John Deere 4020. About a month ago, I decided that I would fix the fuel gauge on it. I bought a new sensor from AI Products and I bought a new gauge from them also. If it's a side console tractor it can be in the PTO valve. 4-Plate on the bottom of the rockshaft housing is cracked or loose. 5-possibly an internal leak in the main pump, but not likely. 40/20vision. I checked the needle valve in the carb as it was a problem last year. Nope, still nice and clean. Pulled a spark plug and turned the engine over, it showed a nice blue spark.

Most of the time it is extremely slow to raise the 3pt and cylinders (up to a couple minutes) , occasionally it will work fine. The steering and brakes seem to work ok. But the 4020, 4230, etc. use large-frame starters the larger starter-solenoid can sometimes draw - or surge close to 20 amps. When hooked directly to a standard ignition switch or push-button - that gets a little worn - it can cause a problem. If it is a non side console chances are it is a bad thermal relief valve located in the end plate of the rockshaft control valve housing. I just replaced mine ($15 from Deere) on my 2510 and it made a huge difference. Then I bleed the brakes. Now the brakes are totally locked up. The tractor won't move. But if I open the bleed screws, it will move.

I have a '67 4020. It has the two metal fuel filters. loosen the bleed screw on the bottom one, pump the lever on the back side of the fuel pump until fuel starts to run out, close it and open the one on the top filter.
