All kineticist subclasses have roughly similar power levels, they just change the stats you stack and how you play the character (risk vs reward mostly). Elemental Engine is high risk/high reward - you're fragile but you literally melt shit. Base Kineticist is like EE but you don't have to risk if you don't want to at the cost of a bit power. They missed the part where your post was tagged as Kingmaker build discussion, and were talking about Lich powers which you can get in Wrath of the Righteous. In KM, I usually let the Tiefling sisters handle any Kineticist needs for my party, but if you want your MC to sling elemental doom too/instead, go for it.
