Bacteria then consume the ammonia and turn it into nitrite (toxic). A different bacteria consume the nitrite and turn it into nitrate (less toxic).

I went to the Ginza Art Aquarium Museum today thinking I’d see beautiful fish and well taken care of enclosures as well as them being beautifully presented. Boy was I wrong…. This is pure animal abuse and this museum should never be supported by any true fish keeper. The tanks are EXTREMELY tiny, there are constant flashing lights, and more.
