On some models they would also put the serial number on the frame, cylinder, and sometimes on the grips, but varied by model. Sometimes there was really no rhyme nor reason to what S&W did/does.It comes from a lineage back to 1899, they begame the model 10 in 1957 and were made in various forms. The 10 dash 6 is known as the heavy barrel variety. Your gun is not as old as you may think, it left the factory in 1965, so it is getting some age on it though. Hope that helps.
