In my instance the shifter actually jumped out of the grooves between the shift forks. You can take the console off around the shifter and pull the boot up and take the four bolts loose that hold the shifter to the tranny. when you pull up the shifter you will see the grooves that the shifter is supposed to go in.If yours has electronic four wheel drive, the electric acutator could be out or going out. you should be able to remove the rod and simply move the switch by hand on the transfer case.
