I've intentionally delayed putting up defense towers, automated guns, etc and mobs have remained relatively small and pests not as powerful. There will be stronger mobs eventually, but there does seems to be some calculation to mob size & strength based upon your current defense strength.

In the end, I sadly agree, the game is currently only a more advanced Tower-Defense game.
