It is of my Strong belief that the engineer's at the Horicon assembly pant did their Home work & Research Well on the Birth of the John Deere 318 back in 1983. The Onan Industrial engine was selected due to a Failing engine issue with the John Deere 317 Tractor's which was the series one Kohler K-17 engines.

The 18 has more power than the Onan did, but with the mulch kit on my 48" replacement deck - I wish I had a few extra HP.
