You had to get to close to some enemies with spam AoE attacks. I dont run a shield Im a quick strike katana or dagger with blood dtep player. I have 60 Int so I run spells/incantations for range support. Moonveil can do it but so far it seems the nagakiba seems to proc it more consistently. Still a lot of baddies to test.

The scaling isn't great but you will get an increase in blood build up as well. Nagakiba, they have the same damage but nagakiba is longer. If you dual wield use both unless you can get 2 nagakibas by trading or in NG+. Dual wielding deals more damage, especially with some damage boost talismans like rotten insignia. Nagakiba is similar damage but better reach.
